Stora Enso, Port Hawkesbury - Canada

Stora Enso is one of the world's largest pulp and paper companies. Located in Nova Scotia on the east coast of Canada, the Port Hawkesbury mill has been in operation since 1962. Today its annual capacity is 190,000 tons of newsprint and 360,000 tons of supercalendered paper (SC).

Since its start-up in 1998, the SC paper machine has reached several world daily speed records at 1600, 1700 and 1800 meters a minute. Approximately 85% of the paper production is sold to the United States and the remainder within Canada.

At Port Hawkesbury, Stora Enso wished to eliminate the use of raw, untreated water in its two paper machines and related processes. For this purpose, SC needed to quadruple the capacity of its water treatment plant while achieving higher quality water.

After conducting several pilot studies, John Meunier Inc., a subsidiary of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, has designed and supplied a turnkey plant capable of providing 60,000 m³ of process water per day, consisting of process water treatment plant with a capacity of 60,000 cubic meters per day. The system consists of :

• two Actiflo™ Ballasted Clarification units
• six Dusenflo™ Gravity Filters
• chemical preparation and metering systems
• distribution and backwash pumping
• instrumentation and control
• piping and valves
• new building and apparatus

In addition to the installation John Meunier Inc was responsible for plant startup and training of Stora Enso staff.
