Oil Sands
Oil sands are mixtures of sand/clay, water and bitumen. These naturally occurring sands are principally found in Canada and Venezuela, with smaller reserves in the USA, Russia, and the Middle East. Large quantities of water are required to extract bitumen from oil sands.
Oil sands found at depths in excess of eighty metres are extracted differently. One approach is Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD).
