These two terms refer to the same function - that is of water passing through small bars or small holes in order to retain any matter whose size is greater than the area the water is passing through.
Screening and straining
Definitions
Among the various definitions used to refer to the separation limits are the following terms :
- coarse screening
- medium screening
- fine screening
- macro straining
- micro straining
It is important to note that the term screening is associated with the use of bars and straining with holes. These may also be measured in either centimeters (screening) or millimeters (straining).
Screen Classification
Depending on the construction method chosen:
- (straight or curved) fixed bar screens,
- mobile bar screens,
- belt screens (or perforated step panels),
- fixed sieve,
- fixed or mobile drum filters with an external or internal inlet
Macro straining
- similar to fine screening,
- removes suspended solids (SS) scum, vegetable and animal waste,
- requires screening upstream with a spacing of 10 to 50 mm.
Micro straining
- used for drinking water,
- it can replace the grit/grease separator in the wastewater treatment process.
